I heard you can give them spears and pearls and many other things but how to exactly do it? Do you throw the items at them or just stand while holding them? When I have spear they get scared, maybe because I threw 2 spears at one before when I tried to trade with him. I just threw a pearl at the merchant (presumably) and he took it and ran away. Later in that room I found a glowing lantern (?). Did he leave the room to get one?
