Navigation back in the day: dead reckoning?

I know early pilots used dead reckoning before other means of navigation were available, but I was wondering why a simple map and compass don't do the trick. I understand compasses could have issues and deviation so they aren't always the most accurate, but how exactly would dead reckoning compensate for that? I know in a broad sense what dead reckoning is, but I guess I don't really understand what it offers given a map/compass are so straight forward in comparison.
