Layers of civilization near Israel

What’s that book called? It’s about cities and civilizations built on top of cities and civilizations near Israel. I think an archeologist digs down six or seven layers each layer a different civilization and different story. The place actually exists. The book tells the story of each layer. Thanks for any info!
