I pet-sit as a side hustle. I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager, before I could drive even. It helped me save up enough money to buy my first house in my mid twenties. I have a career where I make a decent salary now, but I still do it for repeat clients only. The extra cash is nice. This is the first time I’ve ever misplaced someone’s keys and I didn’t even realize it until today.I’ve cat-sat for this particular couple multiple times in the past, but this is the first time I’ve ever watched their dogs too - thus the first time I’ve ever needed access into their house and not just their yard. I met them in person for the second time ever to get their keys on Friday. I put them in my pocket. I picked up dinner on my way home. I went home and ate dinner. I fell asleep on the couch (in my jeans) that night. Took my jeans off the shower the next morning.I haven’t seen the keys since I put them in my pocket.Thankfully they aren’t leaving until Friday so I have a little more time to look before I have to fess up, but I’ve already torn up my car and house looking for them, twice. They aren’t in the parking lot of the restaurant either, I checked that earlier today. The restaurant opens tomorrow at noon and I’m going to call and ask if they have a lost and found. If they aren’t there, I honestly don’t know where they could be, and I’m humiliated. 10+ years of doing this and I’ve never once lost a clients keys. I suppose it was bound to happen at some point. I’m only human, but I’m still embarrassed. And confused. And frustrated.
