How are the summers in Philadelphia?

I’m moving from San Francisco to Philadelphia (center city area) for school. I won’t have a car and plan to walk everywhere. I’ve been looking for apartments and I found one I really love, but is 15 minutes (0.7 miles) away. I’ve been told that walking in the summer is really unpleasant. How true is this? Do you recommend I stay closer to school? Thanks for reading
