Why did Apple seemingly take a step back, with the size of the IPhone X?

Went into the phone shop, to check the new IPhone X out, and I was mildly disappointed in its size...Why didn’t Apple go for a display that is the same size of the IPhone 8 Plus?For a screen that has zero bezels, upping the screen size would be the number one priority in my mind.I don’t know why you’d want an IPhone 6 sized phone with next to no bezels. Disappointing for sure.
