I'm looking for recommendations for project management software to manage multiple research research projects in an academic setting. My lab doesn't need software that tracks document versions or integrates with box/dropbox (in fact we have restrictions on where research can be stored), or even to track how much time each person spends on a task. Instead what we need is a central place to keep track of our various projects, the tasks associated with each project, and to keep track of project timelines (and view them against each other), and keep track of who completes the various tasks. However, since each person is on multiple projects, the whole lab needs to be able to see all the projects going on in the lab and who is in charge of what task and when the task needs to be completed (and when it is completed). While I've been looking at various project management software, I can't really tell which ones can show us multiple projects the way I've described (each person working on 3-4 separate projects, people overlapping on project teams, and everyone seeing all project timelines against each other), or the software seems very designed to do much more complex functions than what we need.I'm basically trying to transition from a whiteboard where I have tons of lists of tasks to a centralized online location where grad students working in the field can see where we are in the project, and where we can break down steps into very small tasks that are accomplishable on a daily/weekly basis (instead of me constantly handing students a paper list breaking down tasks).
